What Is a Medspa Facial? A Los Angeles Guide

What the term means, how it differs from a traditional facial, and how to choose a treatment for your skin.

Microneedling facial skin treatment at Total Body Aesthetic in Westchester, Los Angeles

A medspa facial is not one standardized treatment. It is a broad term people use for facial skincare and skin procedures offered in a medical-spa setting. Depending on the clinic, it might describe a skincare service or a more involved treatment such as microneedling. The name alone does not tell you what is included, who performs it or how much recovery you may need.

If you are searching for a medspa facial in Los Angeles, the most useful first step is to identify your goal: hydration, smoother texture, more even tone, softer fine lines or improved firmness. At Total Body Aesthetic in Westchester, near LAX, we help patients compare specific treatments rather than choose by a generic facial label.

Medspa facial vs. regular spa facial: what is the difference?

A traditional spa facial often focuses on cleansing, moisturizing, relaxation and, when appropriate, surface exfoliation or extractions. A medspa may also offer procedures that target deeper or more specific concerns. However, the word “medical” does not automatically mean a treatment is better, stronger or suitable for your skin.

A laser, injectable or RF treatment is not simply a deluxe version of a cleansing facial. Each has a different purpose and risk profile. Ask for the exact procedure name before comparing prices or booking.

Which facial treatment fits your main concern?

For uneven texture and selected fine lines: microneedling

Microneedling uses controlled micro-injuries to stimulate a repair response. It may improve the appearance of selected fine lines, texture irregularities and acne scars as skin remodels. Results are gradual, and a treatment series may be recommended.

This is a procedure, not a relaxing massage facial. Redness, sensitivity and swelling can occur, and infection, pigment changes and scarring are possible. Active infections, certain skin conditions and relevant medications may affect candidacy.

For texture with mild laxity: Sylfirm X RF microneedling

Sylfirm X combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. A provider may consider it when texture and mild laxity overlap. It is not a laser, and its risks are not identical to traditional microneedling.

RF microneedling can cause burns, scarring, pigment changes and unintended fat loss. Appropriate settings, depth and patient selection matter, especially around thin or delicate skin.

For certain sun spots and redness: Lumenis IPL

Lumenis IPL uses intense pulsed light to treat suitable discoloration and redness. You may see light-based services described as “photofacials,” but IPL is neither a traditional facial nor a laser.

IPL is not suitable for every skin tone or type of pigmentation. Recent tanning, melasma and a history of pigment changes deserve careful assessment because inappropriate treatment can worsen discoloration. Suspicious or changing spots need medical evaluation before cosmetic treatment.

For lines at rest and rough texture: ResurFX

ResurFX fractional laser treats microscopic zones of skin to encourage remodeling. It is non-ablative, meaning it does not remove the entire surface of the treated skin. That does not mean zero downtime or zero risk.

Expect a discussion of redness, swelling, pigment changes and other potential complications, along with sun protection and aftercare. Improvement develops over weeks to months and may require more than one session.

For a personalized adjunct plan: PRF or PDGF

Some microneedling plans may include PRF or PDGF. These are distinct approaches, not interchangeable ingredients. PRF is prepared from a patient's blood; PDGF product selection, formulation and method of use require their own discussion.

Ask what is being used, whether it is applied topically or administered another way, what evidence supports that use and whether it is off-label. A “growth factor” label does not guarantee a better outcome or eliminate treatment risks.

What if my concern is facial movement or loss of support?

A facial may not address the underlying issue. For expression-related lines, Botox or Dysport may be more relevant. For selected collagen and volume concerns, a consultation may include Sculptra. These are injectable treatments, not facials, and require separate evaluation and informed consent.

Book for the concern you want to improve—not just a treatment name that sounds more advanced.

What happens at a medspa facial consultation?

Expect to discuss your priorities, current skincare, medications, allergies, prior procedures and any history of pigmentation problems or cold sores. Tell your provider about pregnancy or breastfeeding, recent sun exposure and any active skin irritation.

A useful consultation should explain the proposed treatment, realistic results, risks, alternatives, expected recovery and total cost. If a series is recommended, ask how progress will be assessed before committing to additional sessions.

  • Is this procedure appropriate for my skin tone and condition?
  • Who will perform it, and what training do they have?
  • What should I avoid before and after treatment?
  • When can I return to makeup, exercise and my usual skincare?
  • Who should I contact if recovery does not look normal?

How much does a medspa facial cost?

There is no meaningful single price for a term that can describe very different services. Compare the actual procedure, treatment area, provider, included products and number of sessions—not simply “facial” versus “facial.”

Review our current specials and request a personalized quote. Confirm whether adjuncts, recommended aftercare and maintenance visits are additional. A promotion should never replace a candidacy assessment.

Skincare between appointments matters

Keep the basics consistent: gentle cleansing, moisturizer and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. ALASTIN peptide skincare may support the appearance of smoother skin as part of a routine, but it does not replace a procedure or guarantee results. Explore our skin care shop for ALASTIN and Skinbetter Science options.

After a procedure, do not assume your normal exfoliants, retinoids or serums are appropriate immediately. Follow the treating provider's instructions on when to restart them.

Planning a facial before an event?

Tell your provider the date. A first-time energy-based or needling treatment can cause unexpected irritation or swelling. Leave time for recovery and reassessment instead of scheduling an unfamiliar procedure immediately before an important occasion.

Frequently asked questions about medspa facials

What is a medspa facial?

Medspa facial is a broad marketing term for facial skincare or skin treatments offered in a medical-spa setting. It is not one standardized procedure. Ask for the exact treatment name, who performs it, its risks and the expected recovery.

Is a medspa facial better than a regular facial?

Not automatically. A traditional facial may fit relaxation or routine skincare goals, while a targeted procedure may suit certain texture, pigment or aging concerns. The right choice depends on your skin and goals, not the label.

Does a medspa facial have downtime?

It depends on the procedure. Microneedling, RF microneedling and laser treatments can cause redness, swelling or sensitivity and require specific aftercare. Confirm recovery expectations for the exact treatment before booking.

How much does a medspa facial cost in Los Angeles?

Pricing depends on the actual procedure, treatment area, provider and number of sessions. Ask for an itemized quote that includes any adjuncts and recommended aftercare. A facial label alone does not identify a comparable service.
