Honor Your Body | How to Control Your Cellulite with Lifestyle Choices, Eating Habits, and More

Many have heard the biblical saying, “your body is a temple”, this comes from the book of 1 Corinthians. Coming off of one of the biggest weekends in the Christian calendar, Easter, I figured it’d be a good time to incorporate a verse or two.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Whether you practice Christianity or not, valuing and honoring your own body is essential to a happy and healthy life. Most of us prefer our bodies to be tight and for our skin to be smooth, but there’s one thing that throw that wish all the way off: CELLULITE! I’m sure we’re all familiar with cellulite, but what is it exactly?

Cellulite is a term for lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. It is most common is women, and the likelihood of having cellulite increases as we grow older. We know what cellulite is… now what causes it to occur?

According to Medical News Today, the cause precise cause of cellulite remains a mystery,

“The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but it appears to result from an interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer that lies below the surface of the skin, and the layer of fat that is just below it.”

There are multiple things that play a factor in cellulite appearing on your body, including: hormonal factors, age, genetic factors, diet, and lifestyle. Below are 6 direct habits that may be causing cellulite to appear on your body.

  1. Sitting at Your Desk All Day - If you constantly find yourself sitting at your desk for hours on end, maybe try standing for 15 minutes out of the hour, or taking a quick walk outside to soak up that California sun!

  2. Lack of Muscle - Work to build up muscle in the area where your cellulite is most likely to occur!

  3. Dehydration - “Not getting enough water can cause toxic buildup in the fat cells that’s difficult for the body to metabolize and contributes to the cottage cheese texture of cellulite. Also, dehydration causes thinner, weaker skin and when the skin is weakened, it has a much greater tendency to show cellulite.”

  4. Cigarette Smoke - This reduces blood vessel flow and as a result, the formation of collagen will be disrupted, this causes more cellulite to show.

  5. Eating Habits - This might be one of the most important, therefore we’ll spend a little extra time here. Be careful about the foods that we are putting in our temple, eating a lot of refined and processed foods encourages cellulite to form.

  6. Too much salt also invites cellulite to make a guest appearance on our bodies, let’s make sure we are taking control and ownership of our salt intake. In addition to taking in too much salt, cheese can also cause many of the same problems. Processed cheeses, like feta, can carry 400 milligrams of salt in a quarter-cup serving. All that sodium causes water retention, which can make cellulite more visible.
